We are a string of small communities, each with its own history, personality and special wonders. Rare scenic beauty extends across more than 80 miles of spectacular coastal and inland waters, just waiting to be explored. Our Crystal Coast features attractive beach communities renowned for their family friendly atmosphere. The newly renovated North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores features amazing displays of freshwater and saltwater aquatic life found in our state. | The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harkers Island pays tribute to a fabled tradition of decoy carving by local craftsmen which continues into the future. Small boats provide access to beautiful coastal marsh flats hidden by thick maritime forests from those who stick to the highways. Ferries regularly travel to Cape Lookout National Seashore where no roads exist. Famed Shackleford ponies, descendents of Spanish shipwrecks long ago, run wild on a nearby uninhabited island. Fertile sport fishing grounds adjacent to warm Gulf Stream waters encompass one of the most acclaimed wreck diving destinations in the world. Our coastal environment is the centerpiece of our identity. People are the real treasure of our area. Natives welcome newcomers. Carteret County is not just a beach destination during summer months anymore. It is not surprising that many weekend visitors become part-time or permanent residents. Consequently, we are experiencing unprecedented growth in a wider array of successful businesses, which serve expanded permanent and multi-seasonal populations. | | | John Langdon Carteret County Manager | | | | | |
